Redfern community farewells activist priest in car crash who set off alarm across state as party celebrates former party supremo

A Melbourne priest who was driving a car into a crowd of people in suburban Melbourne and set off an alarm has been formally killed.

Father Joseph Kelly died in the crash, which claimed two other lives when he hit pedestrians in south-east Melbourne.

The 32-year-old driver, 24-year-old Thomas Proulx, died in hospital.

The priest’s funeral service was attended by thousands of mourners and members of the Catholic Church.
